| ABSTRACT Yerba mate leaves are the most studied and used parts of the tree, while fruits have been little investigated as to their elemental composition. The objective of this study was to characterize the composition, the hot-water solubility of the elements and the nutritional value of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hill) fruits and leaves. Both fruits and leaves were collected from four yerba mate provenances (cities of Cascavel, Quedas do Iguaçu and Ivaí in Paraná state and Barão de Cotegipe in Rio Grande do Sul state) 17 years of age, grown in the city of Pinhais, Paraná state, Brazil. | Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of early selection of open-pollinated yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) progenies, and to classify the best parents and candidates for clones. The germplasm is composed of 140 progenies collected from areas within the natural distribution of the species in Southern Brazil and a commercial genotype (control). The experiment was established in Ivaí, in the state of Paraná, Brazil, in March 1997, in randomized complete blocks, with ten replicates, and linear plots of six plants. | Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a tree species native to the subtropical regions of South America, and is found in Brazil predominantly in the southern region. Despite the historical importance in this region, so far, studies on crop nutrition to improve yields are scarce. Thus, this study evaluated the effect of potassium rates on K soil availability, and the yield and nutritional status of yerba mate. The experiment was conducted in São Mateus do Sul, State of Paraná, on a Humox soil, where K2O rates of 0, 20, 40, 80, 160, and 320 kg ha-1 were tested on 7-year-old plantations. | ABSTRACT The selection of yerba mate superior genotypes, based on each plant leaf weight, is based on genetic parameters obtained from experimental plantations and it is practically impossible from the fourth year of age. Therefore, we estimate genetic parameters and check the feasibility of selection through notes and weight estimates of each tree at 18.5 years of age. The genetic material consists of a combined trial of provenances and progenies of half-sibs with 140 progenies from 7 provenances, installed in Ivaí, Paraná, Brazil, in a randomized block design with 10 repetitions. | O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade técnica do sistema semi-hidropônico para condução de minicepas de erva-mate e a resposta destas a soluções nutritivas de diferentes diluições nas sucessivas coletas, bem como, a sobrevivência das miniestacas produzidas neste sistema, após enraizamento. Depois de onze coletas, obteve-se 95,6% de sobrevivência das minicepas e média de 291 miniestacas m-2 de minijardim. As mudas obtidas por miniestaquia apresentaram média de 85,6% de sobrevivência, sem variação significativa entre as soluções testadas e número da coleta. O sistema adotado é tecnicamente viável, e recomenda-se a utilização de solução nutritiva menos concentrada. |

| Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different compositions of renewable substrates and seasons of the year on the quality of Piptocarpha angustifolia clonal plants. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design in a 4x6 factorial arrangement (four seasons x six substrate compositions). The analyzed substrates were: S1, commercial substrate with pine bark and coconut fiber base (CF); S2, carbonized rice husk (CRH); S3, fibrous and grainy CF; S4, 50% CF and 50% CRH; S5, 30% CF and 70% CRH; and S6, 70% CF and 30% CRH. | O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar métodos de resgate vegetativo para a produção de estacas (corte raso, anelamento total e semianelamento) de árvores adultas de cedro-australiano (Toona ciliata var. australis). Avaliou-se o número de brotos produzidos aos 60, 120 e 180 dias, bem como a correlação entre o diâmetro médio do tronco à altura do peito (DAP) e o número de brotos. Com as brotações resultantes de cada método, produziram-se estacas que foram submetidas à retirada e ao corte de folíolos, e então receberam a aplicação de ácido indolbutírico (AIB) (0 e 6.000 mg L-1).
